What does this latest research mean for the skin?
Well, as far as dermatologists are concerned, it means that there’s a significant increase in the number of melanoma skin cancers being diagnosed, with about 40% of melanomas diagnosed now in women and 20% of them in men.
A melanoma is a skin cancer that starts on the inner surface of the skin.
Melanoma is the most common type of skin cancer in the US, but it’s more commonly found in women, according to the US National Library of Medicine (NLM).
In addition to the increased melanoma diagnoses, the number and types of melanocytes that have formed have also increased dramatically.
“Our study shows that the number, and the types of cells that form melanocytes in response to melanin have increased dramatically, especially among women,” Dr. Daniel T. Poulin, MD, associate professor of dermatology at the University of Florida, told Healthline.
That’s good news for those who are sensitive to light, such as those with dark skin.
Picking up a color-rich skin toner can also help boost the overall appearance of your skin, as the darker you are, the more melanocytes will appear.
But the increased risk of melanosarcoma, or melanoma, in men may also be related to melanocortin-releasing hormone (MCAT) signaling, a hormone that plays a role in regulating the release of the melanocyanin pigment.
Treating melanomas by skin-brightening treatments, such in creams, serum, and creams containing vitamin C, has been shown to have similar efficacy.
Another important thing to remember is that you can’t treat melanoma with a skin-lightening product alone.
If you do use a skin lightening product, make sure to read the ingredients carefully.
