A new study has found that products containing ingredients that have been shown to be effective in treating acne, such as vitamin E and antioxidants, may actually help to prevent it in the first place.
The findings, which appear in the journal PLOS ONE, suggest that a broad range of skin care product companies are marketing their products in a way that may help to improve the appearance of skin.
“This is really an important area of research and development, so I would hope that this will help us understand the potential for skin care in the future,” said lead author Lisa E. Johnson, a PhD student in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, who led the study.
“If there’s a product that’s been shown for a treatment that has not been tested on a human, that’s a big red flag that we need to investigate.
I hope we can find a way to better understand how we can use this data to improve product effectiveness.”
Johnson and her colleagues analyzed the data on over 3,000 skin care and beauty products and discovered that nearly two-thirds of them contained ingredients that are known to be safe and effective in preventing and treating acne.
This means that, on average, the products contained at least one ingredient that could potentially help to treat the disease.
However, the majority of products contained ingredients with known side effects that are also thought to increase the risk of cancer.
Johnson’s team also found that a wide variety of products, ranging from makeup to moisturizers, contain ingredients that could be associated with the development of certain skin diseases, such to eczema and psoriasis.
These included glycolic acid, a powerful antioxidant that has been shown in studies to help prevent and treat psorosis, and beta-carotene, an ingredient that may reduce the risk for skin cancer.
“The majority of these products are very well known and highly-used, and so this suggests that there are more people using them than we think,” Johnson said.
The study also found some ingredients that were not commonly associated with skin diseases were still being marketed in a wide range of products.
For example, in the cosmetics category, the most commonly used ingredient was methyl paraben, a substance that has also been linked to skin cancer in the US.
The research team also tested the effectiveness of different types of skin-care products, looking at whether they contained ingredients from a broad spectrum of skin disorders, such acne, psorias, and eczemas.
They found that the majority, if not all, of the products were safe and effectively used by people with skin disorders.
“A lot of the things we’ve found that are potentially harmful to the skin are products that are marketed for people with severe acne or eczepsis,” Johnson told CNN.
“We have a lot of studies that are looking at these kinds of products and we think they may be important for the future of this emerging field.”
While Johnson said that skin care is a new field in the U.S., it has become increasingly popular in the developed world, including in Europe, where products with ingredients linked to certain skin disorders are now being sold in a range of different products.
In the U: “We have an amazing opportunity to look at these products and see how they are being used, whether they’re actually helping people,” Johnson added.
“And we want to know more about the potential of skin to support the body and its functions.”
Johnson’s group is now investigating other potential applications of the results of the study, including whether the research could be used to better develop treatments for certain skin conditions.
“There are still a lot more questions that need to be answered,” Johnson cautioned.
“There are some things that we know are very promising, but there are still some things we don’t know.”
